Avignon is first and foremost a city rich in heritage, a large part of which has been inscribed by UNESCO, and a city of museums, festivals and more! But Avignon is also a bike-friendly city, with cycle paths, bike parking areas and repair and inflation stations located throughout the city.
All of this means that cycling is the perfect way to tour Avignon:
– travelling by bike between the city’s numerous places to visit
– longer trips to explore the outskirts of the city or just to get some fresh air.

Avignon, a town of reasonable size that can be discovered without a car
With the géovelo app that lets plan your cycling itinerary in Avignon, but also with 4 free park and ride facilities (view the map of park and ride facilities), a tram that connects the central station to the sports fields, 30 Vélopop stations and 300 self-service bikes spread over Avignon, ile Piot, Agroparc, Le Pontet, Montfavet and Villeneuve les Avignon) all on a growing number of cycle paths, whose tour of the ramparts and the canal paths allow you to discover Avignon and its surroundings without a car.
If you’re travelling without your own bike, Velopop, a bike rental service, offers 24-hour passes for just €2 with an unlimited number of journeys of less than 30 minutes and €0.50 for each additional 30 minutes.
You can also take your visit to Avignon as far as the île de la Barthelasse via the river shuttle, or thanks to the Grands Bateaux de Provence which offer river trips between Avignon and Villeneuve les Avignon on Saturday and Sunday mornings during the summer.

For lovers of long-distance cycling trips, Avignon is a stop on 2 Eurovelo routes:
– Via Rhona (EV17), 815 km long that connects Switzerland with the Mediterranean. Avignon is at the end of stage 18/ beginning of stage 19.
– The Mediterranean by bike (EV8), connecting Italy to Spain and traversing south of Avignon. From this cycle route, Avignon can be reached via the Via Rhona from the north/ south direction in Beaucaire.

Cycling is celebrated throughout the year
Whether it’s sporting events or organized bike rides, Avignon displays its passion for cycling through a variety of events. Some dates to remember:
– End of January/ beginning of February: Avignon vélo Passion, event that caters to amateurs as well as professionals, enthusiasts and those who are simply curious! During the 3 days of the event, all cycling practices (mountain biking, BMX, casual bike rides etc .) are placed in the spotlight.
– Second Sunday in September: “Les Cyclades” offer a range of bike rides and activities for a family cycling experience
– Every first Friday of the month at 6:30 pm: the association Roulons à vélo offers night trips with a length of a dozen kilometres to explore the most beautiful paths of Avignon and its surroundings.
